Environmental Protection and Conservation
OPRD considers environmental protection and conservation absolutely cardinal to ensure practical better livelihood for the communities living in the environs therein. Indeed, we stand for practices that guarantee balanced ecosystem conducive to human, domestic-animals and wildlife habitation. We have noted with consternation that the cattle seem more destructive to the natural environment than wildlife. So, more creative ways are demanded particularly to re-socialize pastoralists to manage and utilize cattle differently and appropriately in line with ethical environmental protection and conservation standards. OPRD prays that human and domesticated animals enable nature sustained for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. It is essential to regulate the climate to sustain communities and support biodiversity. Therefore, to realize these ecological aims, OPRD will collaboratively work with local authorities, communities and partners.
A number of issues have been observe which are on verge of chaos if not addressed .
The national parks and game reserves namely- have been breached and the animals attacked, resulting to human and animal conflicts.
Therefore OPRD has done a proposal seeking funding to address the issue of careless killing of animals in the park.
The roads leading to the parks are not passable and hence no access to the same therefore there is need to involve the communities on the same. This is the course for OPRD.
Secondly, some grazing grasslands are these days not accessible, the pastoralist are forced to move long distances seeking pasture and water which at the day end results to attacks and banditry. To reduce these OPRD has come up with a proposal to open these grasslands by enrolling economic value on the same. The thorny shrubs which has intertwined will to be used for charcoal and the open grasslands the soils will be used to make energy saving “Jikos” and this will go a long way to fetch returns for the community. This project is supposed to run for three years. OPRD is seeking funds for the same.
