OPRD in partnership with Youth Empowerment Organization (YEO) is implementing covid19 campaign in IKotos, Magwi and Greater Kapoeta.
With the outbreak of COVID 19 pandemic globally and specifically in South Sudan, most people do not seem to accept that the virus is real and have continued to live there as normal. Citizens from the capital city of Juba and the rural communities as well as those in Eastern Equatoria State (EES) of South Sudan does not seem to follow both the international and national guidelines on the prevention and response measures right from onset of the order by the government from 16 March 2020. Youth Empowerment Organization (YEO) as the lead team decided to mobilize the other youth led organizations which include United Nation Association of South Sudan (UNASS), African Democracy and Resilience Network (ADRNET), Action for Democracy and Development (ADD) and Organization for Peace Relief and Development (OPRD). The coalition/consortia lead Organization together with a team of Youth from EES has created Eastern Equatoria Youth Mobile Awareness team on COVID 19 in order to voluntarily carry out COVID-19 awareness messages.
The youths from EES had earlier on planned to organize a youth conference that was slated to take place in May 20, 2020, but due to the outbreak of the global pandemic Coronavirus COVID-19 and consequently spreading further across the world and eventually South Sudan, the youth conference had to be halted until further notice due the restrictions on social gathering as the Country observes the preventive measures put in place by the World health organization and the Ministry of Health Republic of South Sudan. Since EES was mapped among the hotspot areas due to its porous border entry points other illegal entry points such as Pogee, Owinykibul, Kidepo, Tsretenya, Nadapal and many others, the youth took it upon themselves the initiative to create awareness about the COVID 19, especially in the hotspot areas and not forgetting the different cultures of the various communities in the state.
Summary of the results achieved
For the past four months the consortium has managed to achieve the following results : Minimized Community transmission of COVID-19 with safety precautions and guidelines observed at the hotspots, hard to reach areas and border points; secondly, the Youths groups, women, girls, men and chiefs are operational and this has ensured community ownership; the community has Observed a positive behavioural change through frequent hand-washing, proper usage of facemasks, hygiene and sanitation and information management about COVID-19, the team has Built community resilience towards responses to the COVID-19; and finally reduced GBV act associated with COVID-19. So far the team has managed 70% out of the 90% of target population use facemasks, practices hand washing, maintain physical distancing and again 65% out of 90% of target population adopt and live peacefully within their families amidst COVID-19 impacts. This generally gives us a rating of slightly above 68% which is a clear indication of a positive result towards the key objective of the project; “To contribute to the reduction and prevention of spread of Corona Virus in the Eastern Equatoria State.”
The overall Objective: To contribute to the reduction and prevention of spread of Corona Virus in the Eastern Equatoria State.
Objective 1: To provide Social Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC) at community level to improve skills, knowledge and practices on preventatives measures on corona virus.
Output 1.1: Key preventative measures, behaviours and Community ownership, resilience building practices are promoted at community level.
Issues that need to be addressed OPRD has presence in the whole of South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia Sudan, Uganda and Eretria. But the lessons learnt from the region of kapoeta where this project was being implemented has opened our eyes. The communities have no knolege on the impact of this deadly disease, and life seems to be very normal.
Tis therefore calls for immediate support for not only OPRD but all the humanitarian actors in the regions to help save lives. Without knowledge on covid19, its impact and necessary measures to be taken, then it means death. To save our people we need support, we have proposals but but we don’t have donors for action.
Just a guess a situation where a vaccine has been found as it was announced by Pfizer firm in USA, and the role out is given that people to be injected by the vaccine, what are the outcome possibilities? War, rebellion and rejection since they are devoid of the same and then it means death.
There is need for serious campaign, creation of awareness, masks, hand washing facilities distribution and social distancing learning.
Covid19 has led to many supporters against HIVE AIDS, TB and other ravenous diseases be forgotten, GBV and Mother to child prevention mechanism. OPRD therefore seeks donors who are working in these areas for action.
